HowTo :: reset root password on FreeBSD (single user mode)

NOTE
You must have physical access or a VPS console level access. Do the following

Reboot the Server (FreeBSD in single user mode) and select "option 4" from the boot loader. You'll be prompted for the path to shell (SSH), press "return" to use /bin/sh and once booted run the following commands:

  1. mount -u /
  2. mount -a
  3. passwd TYPE_YOUR_NEW_PASSWORD

Just in case you wish to reset the password for a user, run the following command:

Then, reboot the system. (sync;sync;reboot)
